An Compassion of People We Don't Know: The Way a Person I Barely Knew Helped Me Obtain the Job That Altered My Path

In the late 1980s, I was embarking on a budget travel adventure to the European continent with a friend. Since my friend was exploring pursuing a master’s degree in the Big Apple, we had booked a fortnight visit there en route to London.

We got to the postgrad residence, a sizeable 10-storey building on the Upper West Side called International House. After dropping our bags, we went directly to the dining hall, where we grabbed food, took a seat, and started talking to fellow residents.

Beside me was an Iraqi man studying engineering at an Ivy League institution. He wanted to know what I did for a living, and I told him that I had newly finished with a science degree and had been working on studies with electron microscopy.

He pointed out that there was an research lab at Columbia University – right next door to the school of engineering, which was why he was aware of it. He suggested that I consider applying for a job with them. I dismissed the idea, saying that I was soon departing to Europe and, even more importantly, I didn’t have a US visa.

A day later I toured the city, going back to the cafeteria that after dark. The man from Iraq came up to me and told me that he had organized a discussion for me with the director of the microscopy lab at Columbia. Because he had made the arrangement, I attended the interview – but straight off informed my interviewer that I was without a work permit, so I was probably wasting her time.

As is common in NYC – a place where anything feels possible – she said: “We can make that happen. What's your start date?” I didn't board the aircraft to London.

I was employed there for 36 months. One of the benefits was that I was granted complimentary education at Columbia, and I used the opportunity to earn a master’s of international affairs.

I lost touch with him and I can't recall his full name, but his selfless gesture changed my life in numerous aspects. I didn't possess the confidence or self-assurance to approach someone at an prestigious college and seek a position. And, I had consistently hoped to study abroad, but could never have afforded it without that free tuition.

What's more, that role at the university paved the way for a role in Europe where I got to know my wonderful partner, with whom I am raising a family of four kids. This was a pivotal life event. That benevolent individual set me on a different course in life, and I’m eternally thankful.
