Cameroonian Opposition Leader Faces Legal Action Regarding Electoral Turmoil, Authorities Declares

Election Protest in Cameroon
Numerous in Cameroon express anger over the fact that Paul Biya has won an eighth presidential term

Cameroon's Interior Minister the interior minister has declared that political opponent Issa Tchiroma Bakary will face legal action over claims that he incited "violent electoral rallies".

No fewer than 4 protesters have been fatally wounded during skirmishes between police and military and opposition supporters since the electoral process on October 12, with 92-year-old President Paul Biya obtaining an eighth term in office.

The opposition leader insists that he was the true winner, a statement disputed by the governing party, the CPDM.

Violent crackdowns by police and security officers on protesters have worried the world leaders, with the UN, African Union and EU calling for moderation.

Minister's Allegations

On Tuesday, Nji accused Tchiroma Bakary of organising what he described as "unlawful" rallies causing the loss of lives, and also condemned him for announcing success in the election.

He further stated that the opposition leader's "accomplices behind an subversive plot" will also be prosecuted.

Vote Outcome

The president, who assumed office in the early 80s and is now the most elderly national leader, secured the October 12 vote with a majority of the ballots, compared to 35.2% for the challenger, according to Cameroon's Constitutional Council.

Challenger's Position

Tchiroma Bakary is has not yet commented to the authorities' move to try him, but he had previously declared that he refused to acknowledge a stolen vote - and that he was undaunted of being detained.

Following the vote count, he reported that armed men shot on protesters gathered near his home in the city of Garoua, fatally wounding at least two civilians.

Probe Launched

Recently, the interior minister revealed that an investigation would be launched into clashes before and after the declaration of the vote outcome.

"Throughout the violence, some of the criminals died," he commented, without giving a exact count of demonstrators who have been fatally injured in the incidents.

The minister noted that a number of personnel of the law enforcement also suffered major harm.

Present Conditions

Although the interior minister insisted the condition throughout Cameroon was now manageable, demonstrators remain active in certain regions of the country, especially in urban centers, where protesters established roadblocks on that day, and ignited tyres on the roads.

Observers warn that the post-electoral violence could lead the country into a governmental instability.
