Democrats Condemn Trump After He Suggests They Should Face Capital Punishment
Lawmakers from the Democratic party demonstrated outrage after Donald Trump alleged a coalition of Democratic legislators of being "turncoats" and asserted they should be taken into custody and punished "through capital punishment" following their posting of a disputed video.
The Content That Provoked the Dispute
The clip, shared on earlier this week, includes six Democratic elected officials who formerly acted in military or security roles.
"Similar to us, you all swore an pledge to safeguard and support this national charter," the representatives stated in the short video. "At present, the dangers to our governing document are not only from abroad, but from right here at home. Our statutes are clear, you can decline illegal orders, you can refuse illegal orders, you have to decline illegal orders. No one has to follow orders that break the statutes or our constitution."
Trump's Incensed Reaction
The recorded statement appeared to trigger a furious reaction from the former president.
On later in the week, Trump posted on Truth Social: "This represents SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these traitors to our Nation should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In an additional post, he stated: "This represents really serious, and Harmful to our Country. Their words cannot be allowed to persist. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a subsequent post, he stated: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, liable by DEATH!" He also reposted a declaration that stated: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Opposition Officials Answer
Following Trump's statements on that day, Top Democrats released a joint announcement denouncing the comments.
"Violent politics has no position in the United States," they declared. "Congress members who participated in the video all acted our United States with great patriotism and excellence. We clearly denounce Donald Trump's disgusting and dangerous death threats against members of Congress, and appeal to House Republicans to vigorously do the same."
The party representatives also mentioned that they had been in communication with protective services "to guarantee the security of these members and their loved ones."
"Donald Trump must right away remove these unhinged social media posts and retract his aggressive discourse before he gets someone killed," the declaration continued.
Lawmakers' Firm Answer
The officials who were featured in the video also published a response.
"We serve as ex-military personnel and defense specialists who value this United States and took an oath to defend and uphold the national charter of the United States," they stated. "That oath continues forever, and we plan to keep it. No warning, pressure, or promotion of aggression will deter us from that sacred responsibility."
"What's most telling is that the former president deems it punishable by death for us to repeat the legal requirements," they continued. "Armed forces members should understand that we have their protection as they execute their pledge to the founding principles and obligation to adhere to only lawful orders. It is not only the right thing to do, but also our obligation."
They continued: "All citizens must join forces and censure the ex-president's demands for our murder and partisan aggression. This is a time for moral clarity."
Additional Governmental Comments
The Opposition leader also denounced Trump's comments and published on online networks: "It's important to understand: the ex-commander in chief is requesting the capital punishment of elected officials."
He added: "This constitutes an direct THREAT. Every Senator, each house member, all citizens – regardless of party – should condemn this immediately and absolutely."
The GOP leader justified Trump's claim that the Democrats had engaged in "sedition", characterizing the video as "highly unsuitable", commenting: "This represents very harmful, you have important representatives of the legislature telling soldiers to disobey orders, I think that represents without precedent in American history."
The Republican leader also allegedly stated to media outlets that in what he reviewed of Trump's posts, Trump was "defining the violation of treason" but that "attorneys have to examine the terminology and determine all that."
White House Statement
During a administration briefing on Thursday afternoon, when asked by a reporter, "Would the president want to put to death members of Congress?", the administration spokesperson responded: "No."
"We should understand about what the president is responding to," the spokesperson declared. "There are current representatives of the US Congress who coordinated to organize a digital communication to personnel of the national defense, to serving soldiers encouraging them to disobey the executive's lawful orders."
She said: "The sanctity of our defense system depends on the command structure, and if that chain of command is violated, it can cause fatalities, it can result in confusion, and that's what these congressional representatives ... are basically encouraging."
