Mikel Arteta feels assured that his squad can persist in handling with fitness issues after confirming that attacker Kai Havertz will not return for several more weeks.

Prolonged Recovery for German Star

The Germany international has been absent for months after undergoing an operation on his knee. Initially expected to return earlier in December, Arteta explained the player faced a hurdle when advancing his rehabilitation and was unable to move forward “the next phase.”

“We took lessons, and managed to assemble a group that is far more dependable and has greater depth,” commented Arteta.

Tactical Decisions for Midweek Fixture

This update creates a tactical puzzle for Wednesday’s fixture at the Emirates against Brentford. The manager needs to decide between persisting with Mikel Merino, who got a goal as a makeshift striker against Chelsea, or bringing back Viktor Gyökeres, who featured briefly from a muscle injury off the bench. Veteran striker Gabriel Jesus is available post-recovery.

Defensive Concerns Linger

Additional concerns surround defender William Saliba and attacker Leandro Trossard, who were absent for the Stamford Bridge game. As a result, new recruits Cristhian Mosquera and Piero Hincapié will probably keep their places in central defence for the league leaders.

Arteta believes the significant outlay on new players ahead of this season has left Arsenal in a much stronger position to navigate such setbacks.

Questioned if increased squad depth was benefiting their league challenge, the manager agreed. “Yes, since the current term has seen more issues in some areas, and now the problems with the defence,” he added.

“History has shown us that we must deploy players in various roles, and they must be capable to fulfil different roles if we want to compete at the top. And the case of Mikel is just the best one.”

Commenting on the complication highlighted by national team coach Julian Nagelsmann, Arteta offered additional context. “His recovery was progressing. He failed to advance to the subsequent stage and now the signs are like we have overcome that hurdle.”

Arteta expressed his eagerness to welcome him back. “The team is keen to have him. I mean, it’s a player that, in my view, I love so much for the qualities he offers to the team, but his character, his personality. I observe his frustration being outside.”

“His fitness history is exceptional, he’s been always available, and I look forward to see him return involved playing because I believe it’s going to be a significant uplift.”
