Forecasters have indicated a frosty commencement to the new year, with wintry precipitation likely across much of the UK. Celebrants are being urged to wrap up as near-freezing temperatures are forecast for New Year's Eve.

Hogmanay Events Continue Despite Forecasts

The Scottish capital's iconic Hogmanay festivities are planned to proceed, unlike last year's calling-off. This comes despite advisories for snow in northern Scotland.

"A chilly New Year's Eve night for those partying, so additional clothing will be essential," noted the Met Office.

Displays Under Mostly Clear but Cold Skies

Across the UK, the weather is set to be suited to fireworks celebrations, with a lack of precipitation and clear skies. Temperatures are due to be chilly, so additional clothing a necessity, as per forecasters.

Further north, skies will be cloudier, but this is not expected to impact visibility for watching fireworks. "We are not looking at low cloud, mist or murk, so you should be able to see fireworks, just not stars," remarked one forecaster.

Widespread Snow Warnings for New Year's Day

Heading into Friday, snow alerts have been issued for Northern Ireland and stretching from Wales, over the north-west, the West Midlands and reaching London and most of the south-east of England.

Readings Forecast to Drop Even More

With the start of 2026, it will be "cold regardless of where you are," commented forecaster Simon Partridge. Temperatures are expected to drop further as wintry showers and strong winds are predicted to hit the north of the country.

Around 10cm of snow is forecast to have accumulated in some areas by Friday morning, potentially hitting 30cm on the highest roads and hills.

Health Warnings Released

In addition, amber-level health advisories are in force for the north-east and north-west of England. These are set to continue until noon on 5 January, with readings likely to fall to between 3C and 5C.
