New York City Mayor Eric Adams Plans to Back Andrew Cuomo in NYC Mayoral Race
New York City Mayor Eric Adams has announced his decision to back Andrew Cuomo in the forthcoming mayoral race, despite months of strained relations between the two Democratic figures.
An Unexpected Turnaround After Recent Criticism
Only weeks ago, the mayor had lashed out at Cuomo, labeling him a “deceptive figure and a untruthful person” and alleging of having “a history of marginalizing Black political contenders.” However, in a recent statement, Adams changed his position, revealing he now plans to appear with Cuomo in areas where he maintains significant backing.
“It's essential to really wake up the Black and brown communities that have suffered from urban displacement on how important this race is,” the mayor stated.
The mayor further explained, “Residents have seen their housing costs rise in terms of gentrification and they have been overlooked in those areas, and I plan to visit to those neighborhoods and talk directly with organizers and groups and I’m going to walk with the governor in those neighborhoods and get them involved.”
Race Dynamics and Recent Events
The election battle has so far been shaped by the competition between the former governor and progressive candidate his main rival, whose rise in the polls has drawn interest globally and symbolized aspirations for a rejuvenated progressive wing of the Democratic party.
During a recent candidate forum, both Mamdani and GOP candidate Curtis Sliwa announced they would decline Adams’s endorsement if offered.
Months ago, Adams had begun his bid for another term as an unaffiliated candidate after facing legal accusations which were later thrown out in return for Adams’s cooperation with federal immigration raids across New York City.
During a unrelated press conference on Thursday, the mayor responded to reporters inquiring into the endorsement plan by saying, “I'm meeting Andrew this evening.”
The announcement followed a day after Adams and Cuomo were seen sitting courtside together at the New York Knicks’ season opener at the famous arena, which occurred right after a heated mayoral debate.
