New York Launches Portal for Citizens to Submit ICE Images Following Detentions of 4 American Citizens
The state AG has rolled out a fresh online portal urging citizens to submit images and footage of ICE operations throughout the state. This step follows a day after a high-profile immigration operation rattled Manhattan's Chinatown, triggering large-scale demonstrations.
American Citizens Detained During ICE Operation
A congressional representative disclosed during a news conference that four American citizens were taken into custody and kept for "almost a full day" following the enforcement action. Rallies erupted in NYC on both Tuesday and Wednesday.
"Each citizen has the right to exist without intimidation," the attorney general stated in a statement.
"Anyone who observed and documented federal operations during the raid, I urge you to share that evidence with my office. We are dedicated to examining these accounts and determining any violations of law."
Portal Features
The portal includes spaces to upload photos and videos of the raid, along with a field to indicate location information. Prior to sending, submitters must mark a option that confirms that "authorities could utilize any evidence provided in a public document, including in a court case or government document."
Details of the ICE Action
The enforcement action, which witnesses say featured more than 50 government officers, happened in a famous district of Manhattan where fake handbags, accessories, jewelry and merchandise are sold daily widely â frequently to visitors.
Footage of the incident show multiple hooded and equipped federal agents zip-tying and detaining a man, and shoving away bystanders. Crowds of New Yorkers trailed the officers through the streets. An military-style transport was observed traveling down the urban roads.
Political Response
In a Wednesday press conference held with the rights organization, congressman Dan Goldman, a lawmaker, stated that four nationals were arrested by immigration for about 24 hours and that there were "no conditions where four American citizens should be taken for no reason." He noted the individuals were let go on the following day with no legal action taken.
"There's a clear purpose here. It is not focused on deporting lawbreakers," Goldman remarked. "This represents a militarized effort to create conflict. It is merely a excuse to incite violence for federal officials to utilize the armed forces to halt conflict that they themselves caused."
Broad Criticism
Outrage over the ICE raid escalated â each of the mayoral candidates criticized the raid, along with NY's governor.
"Repeatedly, the Trump administration selects oppressive displays that create fear, instead of protection. It needs to cease," a political candidate wrote.
New York City community groups voiced concern too.
"Immigration agents descended on the neighborhood with military-style vehicles, masked agents and riot gear to go after street vendors attempting to earn income. This action had nothing to do with community security and was entirely about intimidating residents and neighborhoods," remarked the leader of a major immigrant coalition.
Official Guidelines
Official guidelines forbids the detention of US citizens and the organization has stated it refrains from apprehend citizens. Nevertheless, investigative journalism has discovered that more than 170 American nationals have been detained unlawfully by federal agents since the beginning of the current administration.
Ongoing Trend
Immigration operations have been cropping up increasingly in New York and around the country recently.
A mid-October raid in the city center was the initial documented operation on an refuge facility of the current administration. Demonstrations opposing immigration enforcement are ubiquitous as are accusations of force and abusive practices.
Most recently, a submission filed by civil rights groups alleged healthcare failures of women with child in government custody.
