Nicolas Sarkozy to Pen Prison Memoir Documenting Three Weeks In Custody

The ex-president of France will soon publish a personal account this autumn called Diary of a Prisoner, chronicling his experience served behind bars.

The announcement was made less than two weeks after the ex-leader was released while he appeals the court ruling for criminal conspiracy connected to efforts to secure presidential race money linked to the regime of the late Libyan dictator.

Prison Experience: Solitary Musings

“Inside jail there is nothing to see, and nothing to do,” he reflects in one passage, implying the book will focus on his thoughts while in isolation as opposed to a broader observation on the packed and crisis-hit correctional facilities in the country.

“I forget silence, which is missing at the prison, where one hears constant sound,” he states. “The racket is alas constant. But, just like the desert, personal reflection is fortified while incarcerated.”

Release Hearing: Sharing the Struggle

While appealing for release, the former leader participated via screen from a room in prison, describing his time inside as gruelling. He expressed in court: “I want to pay tribute to all the prison staff, showing great humanity, and who helped make this difficult experience tolerable – as it truly is one.”

“I never imagined that in my seventies, I’d be in prison. It’s a hardship that has been imposed on me. It’s challenging, I acknowledge, extremely tough. It has an impact all who experience it due to its intensity.”

Historical Context

Sarkozy, who served as France’s president from 2007 to 2012, became the inaugural past president in the European Union and the first postwar leader of France to serve time in prison.

Before entering jail he had said he intended to spend the period for authoring a memoir.

Cell Library

It is not certain whether he had time to go through the texts he took into prison: a life story of Jesus spanning two books together with Dumas’s work The Count of Monte Cristo, a plot where a blameless person is sentenced to jail then breaks out to take revenge.

Life in Confinement

The former leader was held in isolation to protect him in a space roughly 100 square feet featuring a personal bathroom at the correctional facility in the city. Two bodyguards were stationed in an adjacent room.

It was stated that he had eaten only yoghurts during his stay due to concerns any food could have been tampered with. He had facilities to cook for himself but he turned this down, as per accounts. Unclear remains if he will detail meals during incarceration.

Defense Viewpoint

Sarkozy’s lawyer, who visited his client each day during the incarceration, told the release hearing he would be safer released compared to inside. “There were threats against his life, has heard screaming during nighttime plus rapid actions in an adjacent room when a prisoner self-harmed.”

Case Background

He entered custody last month after a French court imposed five years in prison on conspiracy charges in connection with efforts to obtain political donations during his election campaign.

He maintains his innocence and is contesting the ruling, and another court case is scheduled for early next year.
