Militiamen smirk as they move on the bed of a pick-up truck, racing past a row of several dead bodies and moving in the direction of the sinking Sudan's sunset.

"See this extensive work. See this act of ethnic cleansing," a combatant shouts.

He smiles as he directs the camera on his person and his companion fighters, their Rapid Support Forces identification on display: "They are all going to die this way."

The men are exulting in a mass killing that relief organizations suspect killed more than thousands of people in the Sudanese city of al-Fashir last month.

An Urban Center Isolated from the World

Following their control of the city under siege for almost two years, from August the RSF proceeded to consolidate its dominance and restrict the remaining inhabitants.

Space-based imagery show that forces started to erect a enormous berm - a elevated dirt embankment - around the perimeter of al-Fashir, closing entry points and halting aid.

While the blockade worsened, multiple individuals were slain in an militia strike on a mosque on mid-September, while the international organization reported dozens more were murdered in unmanned aircraft and artillery attacks on a refugee settlement in the autumn.
