Russian President Vladimir Putin Assures Uninterrupted Crude Oil Supplies to India in Rebuff of American Sanctions

Amid a unambiguous signal to the West, Leader Vladimir Putin has told Prime Minister Narendra Modi that Russia is prepared to provide “uninterrupted” deliveries of oil to India. This declaration came as the two leaders met in Delhi and asserted their relationship were “resistant to external pressure.”

A Statement For the United States

This affirmation, delivered Friday, appeared to be a direct challenge at Washington, who have sought to pressure New Delhi into scaling back its historical links with Moscow. This comes comes after earlier American measures, including additional tariffs on India over its acquisition of Russian oil.

“Our nation is a trustworthy supplier of oil and gas and anything necessary for the development of India’s industry,” the Russian president stated. “Russia is prepared to continue ensuring the consistent delivery of energy for the booming Indian economy.”

The Indian leader, without naming energy specifically, echoed the sentiment by stating that “a stable energy base has been a key and crucial foundation of the bilateral cooperation.”

Questioning Washington's Stance

In the lead-up to the summit, via a television interview, Putin had challenged Washington's stance on India's oil imports. Putin stated, “Should America has the right to buy our nuclear fuel, why shouldn’t India enjoy the same privilege?”

The visit represented his first visit to India after the onset of the war in Ukraine, and both sides undertook a visible show to display that the friendship between the heads of state remained intact.

A Warm Greeting

Employing an unusual move, Modi welcomed directly Putin upon his arrival. The two shared a warm hug like longtime companions before having a private dinner together.

The Indian prime minister later described India's partnership with Russia as “a guiding star” and noted it was “built on shared respect and deep trust.”

Strengthening Defence and Economic Partnerships

Friday's talks resulted in multiple significant pacts in the fields of defence and economic cooperation. A cornerstone agreement was the finalization of an strategic roadmap that runs to 2030, which targets to double bilateral trade to a hundred billion USD annually by the end of the decade.

Additionally pledged to restructure their strategic cooperation. Even as Russia is still India's primary supplier of weapons, its share has declined over the past decade as India works to widen its supply base.

The joint statement highlighted an agreement on the collaborative manufacturing of advanced weapons platforms, although specific reference of purchases such as the Sukhoi Su-57 were omitted.

In conclusion, Moscow and Delhi reiterated that in the “present intricate, strained, and uncertain international environment, Russian-Indian ties continue to be resilient to foreign influence.”
