The ice cream brand's Founding Partner States Unilever Prevented Pro-Palestinian Frozen Dessert Flavor
One of the co-founders of the well-known frozen dessert company Ben and Jerry's has stated how corporate owner the multinational conglomerate blocked the launch for a new pro-Palestinian ice cream flavor.
Ben Cohen, who established the business alongside Jerry Greenfield, disclosed how he will personally create this new product within an individual collection highlighting issues Ben & Jerry's has been barred from speaking out about.
Longstanding Dispute Involving Creators and Parent Company
This latest development intensifies the continuing tension between the world-famous ice cream maker and its corporate parent, the UK-based packaged goods corporation which acquired the ice cream brand since 2000.
The co-founders have claimed that Unilever along with their ice cream division the Magnum brand improperly prevented Ben & Jerry's from "honouring its social mission".
The Fruit Sorbet becoming a Symbol of Solidarity
Mr. Cohen revealed through an Instagram video that he is creating a new watermelon-flavored sorbet, asking for consumer ideas for the product's name and potential ingredients.
“I'm accomplishing what they were prevented from doing,” Mr. Cohen stated from his kitchen. “I'm making a watermelon-flavored frozen dessert that advocates for lasting ceasefire for Palestinians and calls for addressing the harm that was done there.”
This particular fruit has emerged as an emblem for solidarity with Palestinians because of its coloration, which closely resemble the colors in the Palestinian flag – red, green, black and white.
Historical Activism plus Current Changes
Several years ago, Ben & Jerry's ceased sales of their merchandise in areas occupied by Israel, leading to the parent company transferring the Israeli operation over to a local licensee, thus allowing continued sales in disputed territories.
The new dessert series is being developed under Ben's Best, the activist ice cream brand which originally created in 2016 for endorsing former political contender Bernie Sanders via the product "Bernie's Back".
Leadership Changes plus Future Intentions
The founder revealed how he will develop additional ice cream flavors that address issues that Ben & Jerry's was prevented from speaking about openly due to corporate restrictions.
The announcement comes after co-founder Jerry Greenfield resigned from the company in September, after many years of involvement, mentioning worries that the company's autonomy was undermined after Unilever's decision to restrict its social activism.
Previously, Ben Cohen commented how "Jerry has a really big heart and this conflict with Unilever was deeply distressing him."
"My heart leads me to keep working within the organization to fight for corporate autonomy ensuring that the company can achieve the social mission, the values which it was founded on while upholding for over 40 years," he told journalists.
