The network's Top New Show of This Year Gets a Substantial Extension for Two More Seasons.
Last October, the late-night programming block debuted a new season of its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. However, later that same month, the channel introduced a brand-new animated series with a distinctly unique feel. Haha, You Clowns emerged as heartwarming and calm, reminiscent of a cartoon version of a laid-back talk show. During a period often defined by cynicism, this show's wholesomeness found an audience and helped it become a surprise hit.
A Significant Investment
In mid-December, the network confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for a further two seasons. This gives creator Joe Cappa a massive runway to develop the story of the Campbell family. The series follows three respectful teenage brothers whose central trait is their strong bond for their widowed father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four central characters.
"I am incredibly thankful to the audience of the show who took a chance on the show and spread the word," stated Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."
Executive Acclaim
Accompanying the news praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and uniquely eerie." He specifically highlighted the fans who discovered the show and championed its uniquely offbeat sensibility.
"All of you got behind this new show, praised it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Wholesome Alternative
Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a comforting antidote" to other adult animated fare. Viewers found something unexpectedly cozy about observing this charming family go about their daily lives.
At the time, creator Joe Cappa stated his desire to evolve comedy past its long-running sarcastic tone. He linked this trend to various cultural shifts.
âWe're stuck in a cycle of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,â said Cappa. âThe attitude is that we have to know weâre the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we just have to laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.â
Future Seasons
Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa has the opportunity to catalyze that comedic shift. At a minimum, the renewal guarantees audiences additional episodes to experience the gentle humor of the beloved Campbell clan.
The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. All episodes is currently streaming on HBO Max.
