Vince Zampella, renowned for co-creating the immensely successful video game Call of Duty, has died in a traffic collision in the state of California at the age of 55.

The tragic news was verified by Electronic Arts, the publisher that controls Respawn Entertainment, a game studio that he helped create.

The influential industry figure passed away following his car crashed and was engulfed in flames on a motorway in Los Angeles on Sunday morning, US media outlets report.

"This represents an unimaginable loss, and our deepest sympathies go to Vince's family, his family, and the countless individuals inspired by his legacy," a spokesperson for Electronic Arts stated.
