During the bulk of the fifth and final season of the popular Netflix show, Holly Wheeler and Max Mayfield are imprisoned in a realm of memories forged from the past of Vecna. Their mission for an escape route in "Escape from Camazotz" leads them to relive a traumatic incident from Henry's youth—a discovery that could contain the key to defeating him for good.

A Journey Into the Mine Shaft

When she finds Max in the world called Camazotz, Max reveals she is sheltering in a chamber that Henry avoids at all costs. By leaving the lens cap on a viewing device pilfered from Henry's old home lets Holly see that the danger lies not within the cave. Matching her view through the cap, she and Max plummet into a subterranean passage.

In this place, they observe a young, eight-year-old Henry find an wounded, fearful individual. Attempting assistance, the man fires a gun, wounding the boy in the hand. In a desperate act of self-defense, Henry ends the threat with a rock. "Was this the turning point?" Holly questions through tears. Essentially, yes, but the trauma wasn't just a simple act of survival.

In keeping with mysteries in volume 2, the significance of the mine shaft incident originates in the stage play Stranger Things: The First Shadow.

An Interdimensional Incident and A Spy's Mission

The play reveals the 1943 event, which reportedly teleported a warship into a plane later called the Abyss. It faced creatures, and the only one to return was the captain, who emerged in a vegetative state with an different blood composition.

The captain's son, the future Dr. Brenner, wanted to repeat this dimensional breach in remote Nevada. One of his scientists stole research materials to sell to the Soviets, who were keen to start their version of the tests. The man in the tunnel was that very thief.

Unlocking the Mystery

Based on what is revealed about his research, the briefcase almost certainly contained samples of the altered blood. At that moment, Henry is bleeding from his hand. Exposure likely occurred upon opening the case, leading to the origin of his telekinetic gifts—abilities he would later pass on to the test subjects in Hawkins Lab.

A second theory, the box could have held strange particles that eventually found its way to the Hawkins lab, where it acts to anchor the Upside Down. *The First Shadow* reveals that the boy was transported in the Abyss, reappearing after half a day with a new blood type and personality. From then on, he battles the control of a sinister presence, similar to how the character Will was influenced by the shadow monster in season 2.

Confronting Terror

Henry's enduring terror linked to that memory shows how profoundly traumatic the event was for him. Even as he commands the Hive Mind and works to collapse the Abyss into Hawkins, a fragment of his psyche lingers. Vecna uses fear, and the show is setting up a climactic battle between Vecna and Will, who has deliberately faced his own deepest fears to become stronger.

His confrontation has effectively disarmed Vecna. Crucially, Will now is aware of what his enemy truly fears, potentially giving him a critical advantage in the series finale to come.
